Excellent catalog and handbook for Swiss <b>replacement cancels</b> (“Aushilfstempel” in German, “cachets provisoires” in French). The replacement cancels are a fascinating area of Swiss philately, they have never been announced by the Swiss post and served only postal purposes.<br>When a normal circular date stamp got lost, stollen or damaged, the postmaster could order a replacement cancel for the period of time, a new regular cancel would have been produced. The supplies branch sent most often the same day a replacement cancel, that was made of a rectangular frame and types that formed the town name for the occasion including date and year (last two figures of the year).<br> Very often these cancel were in use just a few days until they have been returned to the supplies branch immediately, when a new or repaired cancel arrived from the factory and was replaced.
The catalog quotes and describes all cancels known until 1990 and tries to delimit the period of use with first and last know dates. Over 4000 cancels have been catalogued and quoted.
The catalog indicates from which Canton (state) a cancel emanates and which postal direction was concerned (KreisPost Direktion / Direction des Postes). The quotation apply for stamps on pieces, single stamps with just parts of a replacement cancel are cheaper, letters and cards are worth a multiple of the quotation. It’s a good idea to check old Swiss mail and Swiss picture postcards for replacement cancellations, they are easy to sell at good prices (quotations are very realistic! When I looked at my favourite lithographed picture postcard of GREIFENSEE (the village I grew up) I discovered that there was a replacement cancel on it, which tripled it’s value.
